After being created from the ashes of BRLocos.com in August 2005, the Rail Photo Archive grew dramatically and had attained an overall growth of 80% by March 2006.
At the start of 2006 it was obvious that more server space, and bandwidth, were required to maintain such a rate of growth. So, an additional 10gb disk space and 100gb bandwidth, were rented, incurring a
significant increase in my personal outlay. Thanks to the those who kindly, and generously, responded to the 2006 and 2007 appeals for donations, there are now sufficient resources to see the site through to 2009,
including a growth rate for 2008 in line with that of 2007. I am now seeking donations towards the necessary funds required to operate the RPA beyond 1/1/2009, and I do not expect those who donated
last year to put their hands into their PayPal accounts again this year.
My personal view of web site advertising is that it is annoying, intrusive, and largely ineffective. I am committed to keeping the RPA free of banner ads and pop-ups, and I have yet to find
anybody who has ever received a penny by cluttering up their web site with wholly inappropriate Google ads.
My preferred approach to funding continued growth of the RPA is to invite donations from among the large number of enthusiasts who visit, and will visit, the site throughout the year. This will be more apparent in 2008 than in previous years.
